Mayor Ravi Bhalla

Mayor Ravi Bhalla

Ravi Bhalla was elected Mayor of Hoboken in November, 2017 out of a field of six candidates. Mayor Bhalla’s campaign championed issues he fought for as a two term Councilmember, including balanced development, open space initiatives, flood remediation, sensible spending, and other important topics facing the Hoboken community. Mayor Bhalla took office on January 1, 2018.

A true believer in the American dream, Mayor Bhalla is the first Sikh to hold elected office in New Jersey and is the first directly elected Sikh to become Mayor in the United States.

  • Great moment for Hoboken with the grand opening of @littlecitybooks, @bwekafe & @parkandbloom in North Hoboken! Wonderful to see the expansion of our locally owned businesses, that will further revitalize our north end. Stop by and #shoplocal for 📚, ☕️ or 💐 at 14th & Adams!
  • Had a great time celebrating Shabegh's 8th birthday today! The years have gone by so quick! He's grown from a little toddler to the smart and savvy Hoboken kid he is today. I love playing and watching sports with Shabegh, chess and other games. We love you Shabegh, now and forever - Happy Birthday!! 🎊🎉🎈
  • Our brand new gym at 7th and Jackson is now open and ready for 🏀! The gym provides a much needed expansion of our recreation programming, and is a terrific addition to our mile square city. Shabegh and Katherine enjoyed the instructional classes today for 8 year olds - thanks Director Pellegrini and coaches!
  • ‪On behalf of the Bhalla family, I wish all of Hoboken a safe and Happy #NewYear filled with joy and happiness! I’m deeply grateful to serve as your Mayor and look forward to even greater things to come for our Mile Square in 2020.‬
  • ‪Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays from Arza, Shabegh and the Bhalla family!‬
  • More #VisionZero upgrades with another before/after photo - we’re installing new curb extensions along Newark Street, to reduce the crossing distance for pedestrians and slow down the speed of cars. Our Newark Street Safety Plan will make our streets safer for all users in an area prone to conflicts with 🚗 and🚶, with 10 curb extensions, a protected 🚲 lane, new high visibility crosswalks, 🌧 gardens, and more. AND the project is largely funded thanks to a $450,000 Transportation Alternatives grant, reducing the burden on taxpayers.

Through #VisionZero, we’re taking real, concrete steps to achieve 0 pedestrian fatalities and injuries by 2030.
  • Shabegh is a big fan of our newest Hoboken rec league - flag football! Last year, we decided to re-introduce the popular sport for the winter due to the high demand for recreation, and it is a huge hit with the kids (and here to stay). Shabegh’s team, the Steelers, fell short to the Broncos. Thank you to Coach Max, Director Pellegrini, and all the coaches who go above and beyond for a successful league!
  • Took time out of the day with my family to celebrate a very meaningful occasion, the 550th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak, the founder of the Sikh faith. Guru Nanak always preached a message of universal equality and peace for all of humankind. While Bindya, Arza, Shabegh, and my extended family recognize the occasion every year, today was an especially meaningful milestone where Sikhs came together in celebration at temples and gathering places worldwide. We traveled to Carteret for a service attended by Governor Phil Murphy, Senator Steve Sweeney, and Assembly Speaker Craig Coughlin - thank you to all those who joined.
  • ‪Last year for Halloween, Shabegh was an Eagles football player, this year he’s going with the Jets (although today being Halloween, it’s okay to see ghosts). Arza went with a 70s girl. We’re now on the Hoboken trick-or-treat trail - from all of us, #HappyHalloween! 🎃👻
  • Before and after photos of our new rain garden curb extensions at 2nd and Clinton. The extensions provide three quality of life benefits all in one - 1) #VisionZero pedestrian safety improvements by reducing crossing distance in the street 2) green infrastructure absorbing rainwater 3) adds greenery to our streets🚶🌧🌳
